“I am a businessman. To me, people only do things out of self-interest.”

― Chetan Bhagat, The 3 Mistakes of My Life

In India, it is often said that cricket is a religion and when you mix this with business, love, and friendship, you come up with one of the most intoxicating amalgams ever created. In this blog, we are going to review " The 3 Mistakes of My Life " by Chetan Bhagat published in 2008. The novel follows the story of three friends and is based on the city of Ahmedabad, the only city in India where people will respect you more if you own a business than in service.

My Review

“26 January is a happy day for all Indians. Whether or not you feel patriotic, it is a guaranteed holiday in the first month of the year.”

― Chetan Bhagat, The 3 Mistakes of My Life

The book revolves around the life of three friends Govind, who is a business-minded person, and a person having great ambition. The second friend is Ishaan, who was very good at cricket but was not able to reserve a place in the Indian cricket team and that failure has a deep effect on his life and last one is Omi, who is the son of the priest, who has no idea what he will do in future but he doesn't want to become a priest.

The book is loosely based on the three mistakes made by Govind.
Govind whose economic condition is worse among his friends wants to overturn his life by starting a business and for this, he asks for help from his other 2 best friends ( Ishaan and Omi ) after brainstorming they decide to open a cricket shop banking on the growing popularity of cricket and cricket knowledge from Ishaan. Omi provides them with free land to open the shop.

After the cricket shop become a success, Govind desires to grow and he wants to open many franchises of their shop for that, he persuades his friends to put all their revenue into expansion, who are a little bit worried about expanding their business so early but at last, they agree and the friends start doing other part-time jobs to arrange money for their shop expansion. Ishaan starts giving cricket coaching, Govind starts giving math tuition and Omi gives fitness training. After they arrange the money, they buy a shop but fate takes a cruel turn when the earthquake hit their city and their shop and dream both collapse. This becomes Govind first mistake putting all their money in the shop.

The struggle they face after the earthquake to pick up their business from the ground is the main attraction of the story as the difficult decision they have to take for that and its consequences, which led to other two mistakes by Govind.

One thing about Chetan Bhagat is that he is the author of Indian stories and he writes for Indians. He writes about youth, their determination, problems, ambitions, etc. He understands Indian society and he doesn't try to sugarcoat it in his book and gives a blunt story to readers. This book touches on many events like Ahmedabad Earthquake and Gujarat riots. The story is very intriguing, will keep you intertwined, and will teach you many things about everyday life.

If you have never read Chetan Bhagat Books, I will suggest everyone start with this as this will make you his fan and if you are already a lover of Chetan Bhagat books, you don't need any persuasion for this book .😊
