“I think half the trees in the world are felled to make up the IIT entrance exam guides. Most of them are crap,”
― Five Point Someone
Almost everyone in India has seen 3 idiots, a movie that shattered many records when it was released including the highest-grossing Indian film at the time and is said to be a game-changer movie in the Indian Film Industry but what many people don't know is that it is based on Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. In this blog, we are going to review Five Point Someone; What Not To Do At IIT by Chetan Bhagat. A story about the magical years of college filled with friendship, love, and grades.
India has the largest number of engineers as well as the largest number of engineering education institutes and infrastructure in the world, an achievement to be proud of or to be worried about the fact that many of these colleges have a lack of academic quality, lack of quality professors and poor infrastructure.

Engineering is the most popular career choice in India and This book of Chetan Bhagat is the tale of three buddies (Hari, Ryan and Alok )who are studying engineering at IIT, one of India's most esteemed institutions.
The protagonist of the tale is Ryan Oberoi, a brilliant yet independent student. He thinks that critical thinking and enjoyment of life are the actual sources of education, not memorization of facts from books and formulas. The novel does a poor job of describing the familial dynamics of Hari, a boy from a middle-class family, who lacks direction in his life. Alok, who came from a low-income background, encountered some challenges before enrolling at IIT and aspires to help his family and his sick father by getting a lucrative corporate job after graduation. Another intriguing character is Venkat, who always earns a GPA of 9 or higher and memorizes practically all of the academic texts.
In the first semester of college, the three friends bunk classes, go to movies, drink alcohol and enjoy all sorts of things as result when the results came out, the friends scored very bad CGPAs and Alok blames Ryan for his ideas and the three friends split up. Alok goes on to stay with Venkat. The book also contains the love story of Hari. He fell in love with Neha, the department's HOD Cherian's daughter.
The story then proceeds with friends trying to reconcile, Hari and his love story, difficulties and challenges they face with their education, grades, placement, and life after IIT that make you turn the page automatically.
Chetan Bhagat as an author represents young people and their hopes, goals, and discontent in this book. He provides us with a comprehensive insight into Indian Engineering student life. He is renowned for writing works that the typical Indian can understand. As readers don't really want to consult a dictionary while reading novels, he maintains simplicity in his writing, which helps him connect with the audience and this continues in this book also.
If you are someone who wants to remember your past college life or wants to know what typical college life looks like, then you must read this book once as Chetan Bhagat has filled this book with all the ingredients and spices that make a book, a best-selling book.😊
